The Pottawatomie County Child Welfare Collaborative is a promising community-based empowerment model for creating positive systems change through building effective organizations at the local level, which have the ability to leverage and secure both public and private resources for a common mission of improving child health and well-being.
Because the Collaborative recognized that healthy communities raise healthy children, in order to improve child health, the health of the community at large needed to be improved. Therefore, rather just focusing on children, the Collaborative adopted a broad philosophy of ‘health,’ and developed an action plan to address the issues identified in the study, with goals and objectives aimed at promoting healthy behaviors, creating healthy physical environments, improving socio-economic health and strengthening clinical care in the county.
